2016 Collecting Goals & 2015 Topps Update Complete!

A new year brings new sets to complete so it’s serendipitous that I swung another trade with Nolan’s Dugout before the calendar switched and my package from him arrived today!

2015 update complete

That’s card US99 to complete my set! I still need some help with the inserts and about two dozen of the Update Chrome cards so let me know if you have some doubles to send my way! Here’s my list.

Besides that my collecting goals for the year include completing 2016 Topps Heritage, 2016 Topps main set (series 1 & 2) and update, 1984 Topps, and 2007 Topps Heritage.

I also have some boxes of 2003 & 2004 Topps coming in the mail but I’m willing to piece those together over the next two years.

I started this blog in 2015 with the hope of finding a trading partner to exchange doubles and binge my unwanted cards away. I have found several! Thank you so much to everyone who reads these posts and especially to those who have been willing to trade with me! The card collecting community has been wonderful for a guy trying to make sense of things post heart surgery!

Hobby Box Break #9 – 2015 Topps Update

The final set for 2015 Topps Baseball has been released!

I picked up my box from THREE STARS SPORTSCARDS and cracked it open yesterday. Here’s what I got!

Bryant gets the box cover. I’d have to say he lived up to the hype. Too bad the Cubs were swept by the Mets last night.

First card. Miller had a great year. I had him on one of my fantasy teams. STATS.

2015 update 3s 2015 update 3s01

Rainbow foils for trade. The Pride and Perseverance insert set is an interesting take on players who have overcome certain difficulties to make it to the Show. A fellow blogger has made a callout for some of these.

2015 update bb

Buybacks are supposed to come about 1:18 packs. I received 7 in my 36 packs. I don’t mind having them in packs since it is pretty neat to get some older cards but 7!?

Golds came in bunches as well. Almost every other pack had one. Odds are 1:3. Let me know if you’d like any of them in trade.

2015 update high 2015 update high1

Highlights of the Year inserts carry over from series 1 & 2. This set has grown on me and I’m now looking to complete it.

2015 update josh

A Black, too! Odds are 1:48 for this. I was able to watch the Blue Jays / Royals game last night. Both teams are incredible and I’ll be cheering for whichever one is able to make it to the World Series.

2015 update rare

Rarities. I like the look and player selection.

2015 update rs

I wish they would put the cards in order by Year. The numbering on these doesn’t make any sense.

2015 update tape

I doubt I could hit a ball 441 feet. Compared to the others it seems pretty short, though.

2015 update works

Whatever Works inserts are an interesting idea. I think I’m going to try to complete all of the insert sets for this year’s update. I can feel another Hobby box in my future.

2015 update

Snow Camo variants come at 1:86. My box also had one of these!

2015 update01

A photo variant. I’m not too impressed with this choice of photo.

2015 update02

People seem to be paying way too much for Bryant cards. This one will probably end up on ebay to off set the purchase of another box.

2015 update03

An Auto! I like these much more than a Relic. I don’t think Topps should include Minor League stats, though. This was a pretty good box since the Autos only drop 1:253 packs.

Here are my numbers –

299 of 400 base

39 Inserts

22 Variants

I really like this release and will be getting either another hobby box or maybe a Jumbo. Once that happens I’ll do an update post. Let me know what you are looking for and perhaps we can do a trade! Thanks for reading!

Dances with Trades #4 – 2015 Series 2 Complete

Reader Bryan sent me a message that he had a few more cards for me after we had already completed a trade. Previously, I sent him some Braves and he sent me some cards I needed, although at this moment I’ve lost track of what, exactly. Darn you post-heart surgery brain!!!!

In the mail today I received these four cards, though!

Untitled Untitled01 Untitled02 Untitled03

All of them are great pics and the three base cards complete my 2015 series 1 and 2 sets!

Thank you so much to Bryan and to everyone else who helped me complete the sets!

Now the wait for 2015 Update begins!

Hobby Box Break #4 – 2015 Topps Series 2

2015 Topps series 2 box

My beautiful wife picked this one out for me. Here’s what I got.

Clear acetate Russell Martin 10/10. This would be a super cool variant set to try to collect. I’d think that it’d be way too expensive, though. 1:164 packs. Does anyone have any they are willing to trade?

Before I opened the pack with this card I knew it was in there. It literally clanged on my desktop. There was only one other base card in the pack since this is super thick and heavy. I’d be willing to trade it for an acetate! This is a 1:186 pull.

My favorite insert set is the Baseball Royalty. Great design. Thick cardstock. My pics don’t really do the cards justice. I’m going to try to complete this set. Send them my way, please!

FEAR THE BEARD! Houston has been one of the surprise teams of the year. I think I discovered their power – Everyone on their pitching staff is a Nazarene!

Blah. Jersey relic, again. Who wants it?

Rainbow foils and First Pitches – Frazier, Emmet from the Lego Movie, a funny lady, and two guys who most likely have no idea what’s going on right now.

Eclipsing History will be available for trade. I like the idea but I’m not willing to put in the effort to collect them all.

I am willing to put in the effort for Heart of the Order. I like the players. I like the design. If you have ones I need let me know!

For trade. The only Stepping Up I do is 2 – The Streets.

I should like these but there are so many. I’ll have to go back and see what I have for series 1 before I decide if I’m going to keep them or not.

These as well I’m not sure if I am for or against them. What I’ll probably end up doing is buying a few Jumbo packs and see how many I have afterwards.

I also pulled 9 serial numbered golds. Those are all going to 2015 Topps Baseball – Gold Parallel cards wanted. If you have any that you’d like to trade with him – send him a message through the link!

Final Tally-

288 – base (350)

44 – inserts

1 – jersey

332 total cards.

I need 62 more base to complete the set and one of them is the Bryant RC. I think I’ll take my chances with a few jumbo packs and then try to get the rest through trades.

Let me know if you’d like to trade for any of the cards shown and thanks for reading!

Also, I picked up a huge craigslist lot of Topps Heritage. I have tons of doubles and inserts for 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. I also updated my wantlist with Heritage cards I need for the various years. Trade with me, please!

Dances With Trades #1 – Tatanka

When I first started to put some Topps sets together last year I stumbled across the Lifetime Topps Project during my search for info on the various subsets for each year. That blog was invaluable to me and I think it’s wonderful that I was able to complete my first trade online with the writer. I was able to fill in some of his wantlist and this is what he sent me back.

88 x4

I was able to get partial sets of 1987 and 1988 Topps from my sister and brother-in-law but there are still a few holes. Compared to the 2015 set, these cards look and feel archaic.

2015 x 3

I think this year’s set has received somewhat universal acclaim for its design. Seeing three different colored borders in this pic is truly appealing.

Fernando going strong in Dodger Blue next to him trying to fight back to the bigs in the complementary orange. I fell in love with Fernando after seeing the 30 for 30 film on him.

My great respect for Bo Jackson also came about after seeing his 30 for 30.

Lifetime Topps threw in several Bo cards I didn’t have.

I just realized Bo and Fernando are two guys who attempted to fight back after declining from their peak. That’s something everyone who goes through heart surgery attempts to do as well!

bo topps gold

I hate seeing him in a White Sox uniform but this is such a great pose and pic. Adding the Gold to the card really makes it classy, too!

We’ll end the post with a smile! One of the main reasons I wanted to start a card blog was to complete some sets through trading.  Feel free to comment and let me know if you are willing to trade! I will keep on updating my wantlists and what I have for trade in return.

Hobby Box Break #1 – 2015 Topps series 1

When I first got back into the hobby last year I bought several retail packs from the Big Red Bullseye before I wised up and discovered it’d cost me a few hundred dollars to complete a set.

This year I had the urge to become one with the many and treat myself to a shiny new hobby box of the main release and hope to complete the set through trading and ebay. On February 4th I popped into Three Stars Sportcards and grabbed $60 of sealed succulence.

“This is my Box. There are many like it, but this one is mine.”

The one card from the set that I really, really wanted was the Jack White First Pitch insert. Taking my favorite musician, throwing a Tigers uniform on him, and capturing him on a baseball card while genuinely smiling brings me a double dose of delight. The day before the release I noticed that people were paying over $20 for the card on ebay. Boo! I don’t want to pay that much for one card! That’s why it’s so cool that the first pack I opened – Jack White. boots~

I like the look of Gallery of Greats as well! I think I got two of them from a couple Jumbo packs I also bought. I’m not really a fan of Miggidy Cabrigitty so he’ll be available for trade. The other three are keepers for my collection.

Highlight of the Year cards are alright since I enjoy reading about the history of the game. The cards don’t have enough visual appeal for me to want to collect the set, though.

Free Agent 40 cards are interesting from a historical sense as well. I think Ryan is the only one that I’d want to keep, though.

Hey! What do you know? Another insert set dealing with history! Plus two guys who I know very little about. Since I didn’t start collecting until 1987 it’s pretty cool to get some earlier cards even if they are in the form of buybacks.  I’ll check both of my buyback guys on wikipedia or baseball reference.

I got a nice selection of Archetypes. Plus I think this is the best looking insert set of the series.

Inspired play matches a player from the past with a present player on the same team. I was really hoping for the Kershaw / Valenzuela card. Let me know if you have one for trade!

I don’t really care too much about the parallels. The Golds do look really nice but I didn’t get any players I collect.

Evan Needs HAM!!!

I don’t really get the appeal of a lot of relic cards. Why would I want a square inch of some sweaty shirt another guy wore?!? I’d have rather received an auto. Hopefully, next series’ box.

My final numbers from the box –

300 base (350 in the set)

45 inserts

1 – game-used relic

6 doubles

Not too shabby. A lot of people complain about the amount of inserts. I don’t mind it. I think it appeals more to the younger crowd and we all have to remember that that is when most of us got hooked. If there’s a 9 year-old in St. Paul opening a pack for the first time he’ll probably be pretty giddy to see a few inserts. Besides, if you really want to get rid of them it’s pretty easy with ebay and other websites.
